Iced Filter Coffee: The Ultimate Guide to Better Spring & Summer Brews
Iced Filter Coffee: The Ultimate Guide to Better Summer Brews
As the British summer finally begins to show on the horizon, our caffeine cravings often shift from warming lattes to something a little more refreshing. However, if you have ever found your homemade iced coffee tasting a bit thin or, dare I say, disappointing, you are not alone. Many coffee lovers turn to cold brew, but there is a sophisticated alternative that we believe reigns supreme: iced filter coffee. This method, often referred to as the Japanese-style flash-brew, ensures you do not lose the vibrant characteristics of your specialty beans just because you want them chilled.
In this guide, I will walk you through why this method is the gold standard for summer drinking and how you can replicate professional results in your own kitchen. Whether you are relaxing in the garden or heading out for a stroll through the local park, mastering iced filter coffee will transform your seasonal coffee experience.

Why Choose Iced Filter Coffee Over Cold Brew?
While cold brew has its place, it often produces a very specific flavour profile: heavy, chocolatey, and low in acidity. That sounds lovely in theory, but it tends to iron out the nuances that make specialty coffee so special. If you have invested in a high-quality single-origin roast from our Scorgo Coffee collection, you likely want to taste those delicate floral and citrus notes.
By brewing hot directly onto ice, we use heat to extract the complex acids and aromatic oils that cold water simply cannot reach. The immediate chilling then locks in these flavours, resulting in a cup that is crisp, clean, and incredibly transparent.
The Science of the Flash-Chill
The magic happens during the dilution process. We adjust our standard brewing ratios to account for the ice that will melt during the brew. This ensures the final beverage is perfectly balanced rather than watery.

The Perfect Iced Filter Coffee Recipe
To get the best out of this method, we need to tweak our usual variables slightly. Here is our tried-and-tested ratio for a 500ml brew:
- Coffee: 32.5g of medium-fine ground Scorgo coffee (roughly 65g per litre).
- Total Liquid: 500ml (split into ice and hot water).
- Ice: 200g (40% of the total weight).
- Brew Water: 300ml of hot water at roughly 94°C (60% of the total weight).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Prepare your equipment: Place 200g of fresh ice into your server or carafe. Set your dripper (V60 or Chemex works best) on top.
- The Bloom: Add your 32.5g of Scorgo coffee. Pour roughly 65-70g of hot water over the grounds. Let it bloom for at least 45 seconds.
- The Pour: Slowly add the remaining water in circular motions. Aim to finish your pour so the total brew time sits between 2.5 and 3 minutes.
- The Finish: Once the draw-down is complete, give the carafe a vigorous swirl to ensure all the ice has melted and the temperature is uniform.
- Serve: Pour the chilled coffee into a fresh glass filled with large ice cubes.
Top Tips for Success
- Grind Size: Grind slightly finer than you would for a standard hot pour-over.
- Ice Quality: Use large, clear ice cubes. Small ice melts too quickly and throws off your dilution ratios.
- Choose the Right Roast: For iced filter, we highly recommend our lighter, fruitier roasts from the Scorgo Coffee collection.
